Walt Disney Treasures come to the UK
Buena Vista Home Entertainment have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of two limited edition compilations of original Disney animations, available for the first time ever here in the UK to celebrate 75 years of Mickey Mouse. Available on Disney DVD from 3rd May 2004, Mickey in Living Colour stars Disney's best loved character Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphonies is a timeless collection of 31 charming animated shorts. A third collection on Disney DVD, Chronological Donald, which coincides with Donald Duck's 70th birthday, is planned for release later this year.
The specially packaged timeless collections continue the legacy of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse with generations of the future, past and present and make a special addition to any DVD collection. Those who remember the animated shorts from the silver screen or the early days of television will cherish the opportunity to take a nostalgic trip back in time, whilst the discerning DVD enthusiast will value the importance the animated shorts have played in shaping the future of animation.
Mickey in Living Colour chronicles Mickey Mouse's career with 26 original shorts released between 1935 and 1938 - from the early black and white cartoons to his first adventures in colour. The collection of shorts celebrates Mickey's 75th birthday and charts the development in animation techniques that were to influence the generation of future cartoons. The discs include classic Mickey shorts, which many older Disney fans will remember and treasure - including the jewel Steamboat Willie where Mickey made his first ever appearance, The Band Concert and Mickey's Fire Brigade.
The Silly Symphonies comprises of the groundbreaking series of 31 uncensored cartoons, released between 1929 and 1939, including six Academy Award winners. These musical shorts served as a ground for Walt Disney to experiment with emerging technology, new musical styles and experimental forms. The collection provides a unique look at the evolution of animation. Introductions to selected shorts including the Water Babies and Wynken, Blynken and Nod come from Walt Disney himself and provide a fascinating insight into the making of the shorts. Respected film historian Leonard Maltin also introduces his favourite shorts highlighting their influence on later animations and cartoons.
Both discs feature an array of extras that alone make these DVD cartoon compilations a treasure to own. In addition to the five hours of animation on each collection, there is a chance to take a sneak peek into Disney's archives to look at early concepts, rare merchandise and original artwork for theatrical posters. Mickey in Living Colour features coveted deleted scenes including a deleted animation sequence from The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Silly Symphonies carries an overview from Academy Award ® winning composer Richard M Sherman.
Mickey in Living Colour is a two disc set with a running times of 147mins + 112mins. Silly Symphonies is also a two disc set with running times of 169mins + 171mins. Retail is £21.99 each.
