Gods and Generals and Gettysburg in July

Warner Home Video have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of two epic films depicting an unforgettable turning-point in American history. Gods and Generals and Gettysburg will be available to buy from 5th July 2004 with a retail price of £15.99 and £19.99 respectively. A Civil War Box Set collecting both films together will also be available, retailing at £29.99.

The American Civil War of the 1860s was a period of bloodshed, suffering and heroism when brother fought against brother in a war to shape America's future. These two films from writer, producer and director Robert F Maxwell are a stunning historical and social study of the events and personalities involved in forging modern America. A cast of thousands of Civil War enthusiasts was used to recreate the breathtaking scale and slaughter of battle in a war which claimed more American lives than any other before or since.

Beginning in early 1861 and reaching a climax just before the Battle Of Gettysburg in 1863, Gods And Generals, the screen adaptation of Jeff Shaara's best selling novel and prequel to the acclaimed Gettysburg, is an epic and sweeping portrayal of a nation divided against itself as the Civil War begins. Gods And Generals brings to life not only the Civil War's legendary leaders but also the countless anonymous soldiers and citizens who fought passionately and courageously for their vision of freedom and unity. Fanny Chamberlain (Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino, Mighty Aphrodite), Jackson's wife Anna and Jane Beale reflect the spirit, courage and anxiety of those left behind.

The film illuminates heroes from both sides of the war: Colonel Joshua Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels, Blood Work) who gave up an academic career to enlist in the Union army and became one of the North's finest military leaders; Confederate Generals Robert E Lee (Academy Award winner Robert Duvall, The Godfather) a 25 year US Army veteran and native Virginian forced to choose between allegiance to his country and loyalty to his home; and "Stonewall" Jackson (Stephen Lang, Tombstone) a devoutly religious man whose faith and courage made him an outstanding soldier and Lee's most trusted lieutenant.

Picking up the narrative where Gods And Generals ends, Gettysburg recounts the story of the three tumultuous days which turned the tide of the Civil War in the Union army's favour. Featuring thousands of Civil War re-enactors marching over the very ground on which the Battle of Gettysburg was fought, writer, producer and director Robert F Maxwell's epic is as visually stunning as it is historically accurate.

Over the course of the three day battle, Gettysburg focuses on the crucial engagements and leading personalities who decided the fate of the conflict. Among these is Union Colonel Joshua Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels) who led the decisive defence of the tactically vital Little Round Top. The strategic differences in the relationship between the Confederate Lt General Longstreet (Tom Berenger, Platoon) and General Robert E Lee (Martin Sheen, Apocalypse Now) which hampered the Confederate attack are exposed. The appalling slaughter of Pickett's Charge, as Major General George Pickett (Stephen Lang) leads his men towards the Union guns and certain death, highlights the heroism and faith of the individual soldiers.
