Queen and Slim trailer: Lena Waithe sets up Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith to ride or die
Writer-director-actress Lena Waithe has been making herself known in front of the camera in recent years, appearing in Spielberg's' Ready Player One and in Master of None, while also picking up an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for Aziz Ansari’s hit Netflix show. Queen and Slim marks her first time directing writing and directing a feature, with Daniel Kaluuya and newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith starring in a Bonnie and Clyde-style film with more serious political themes attached to their time spent on the run. The first trailer for Queen and Slim arrived during the night and you can watch it above now.
While on a forgettable first date together in Ohio, a black man and a black woman, are pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. The situation escalates, with sudden and tragic results, when the man kills the police officer in self-defence.Terrified and in fear for their lives, the man, a retail employee, and the woman, a criminal defence lawyer, are forced to go on the run. But the incident is captured on video and goes viral, and the couple unwittingly become a symbol of trauma, terror, grief and pain for people across the country. As they drive, these two unlikely fugitives will discover themselves and each other in the most dire and desperate of circumstances, and will forge a deep and powerful love that will reveal their shared humanity and shape the rest of their lives.
Waithe has adapted James Frey's original story, with the supporting cast featuring Chloë Sevigny and Bokeem Woodbine.
Queen and Slim hits US cinemas on November 27 and arrives in the UK some time later on January 31, 2020.
