Luce trailer: Octavia Spencer maybe isn't the teacher she appears to be

Luce (2019)
Dir: Julius Onah | Cast: Kelvin Harrison Jr., Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, Tim Roth | Writers: J.C. Lee (play), J.C. Lee (screenplay), Julius Onah (screenplay)

After her standout performance in the recently released Blumhouse horror, Ma, Octavia Spencer is taking on another dark, psychological role in the upcoming Luce. She's always been a well respected actress, but perhaps one that doesn't receive the praise she deserves, and these types of roles could change all of that. It also stars Naomi Watts and Tim Roth as the parents of the adopted Kelvin Harrison Jr. - another actor who has been delivering some great performances in recent years. The first trailer for Luce has just arrived and you can watch it above

It’s been ten years since Amy and Peter Edgar adopted their son from war-torn Eritrea, and they thought the worst was behind them. Luce Edgar has become an all-star student beloved by his community in Arlington, Virginia. His African American teacher, Harriet Wilson, believes he is a symbol of black excellence that sets a positive example for his peers. But when he is assigned to write an essay in the voice of a historical twentieth-century figure, Luce turns in a paper that makes an alarming statement about political violence. Worried about how this assignment reflects upon her star pupil, Harriet searches his locker and finds something that confirms her worst fears.

Julius Onah (The Cloverfield Paradox) directs this adaptation of J.C. Lee's play, with Harrison Jr., Roth and Watts starring alongside Spencer.

Luce opens in the US on August 2 with a UK date still be announced.
