Winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction author Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch has now been turned into a film. While there’s no denying the success of the novel, the basic plot seems a little leftfield. It’s basically about a young boy who steals a prized-painting during the middle of a terror attack at an art museum that kills his mother. Having not read the book it’s hard to know how that scenario plays out, but apparently it’s only the beginning of quite a number of extreme life choices made by the kid as he grows up. There’s a solid cast and director involved so hopefully they can pull it off. Check out the trailer for The Goldfinch above to find out more.

Theodore “Theo” Decker was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love. Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day…a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch. The Goldfinch.

John Crowley (Boy A, Brooklyn) directs, with the cast starring Ansel Elgort, Nicole Kidman, Sarah Paulson, Finn Wolfhard, Jeffrey Wright and Luke Kleintank.

The Goldfinch hits US cinemas on September 13 and the UK on September 27.
