The Nightingale trailer: The director of The Babadook returns with a gothic revenge drama

The Nightingale (2018)
Dir: Jennifer Kent | Cast: Aisling Franciosi, Damon Herriman, Ewen Leslie, Sam Claflin | Writer: Jennifer Kent

The Babadook is a modern-day horror classic that made sure fans of the film kept a keen eye out for the next project directed by Jennifer Kent. It's been quite a wait, but The Nightingale sees her move away from the horror genre into a gothic revenge drama/thriller that has been receiving fantastic reviews on the festival circuit since premièring at Venice last year. Relative newcomer, Aisling Franciosi, has also been praised for delivering a strong performance.

Judging by the trailer this could be even darker than the thrilling frights she gave in her 2014 debut. It's taken some time to get an official release date in the US and nothing has been confirmed for the UK at the moment. However, we will have a review of the film next week as part of our Sundance London coverage. A first trailer for The Nightingale has just been released and you can watch it above.

Set in 1825, Clare, a young Irish convict woman, chases a British officer through the rugged Tasmanian wilderness, bent on revenge for a terrible act of violence he committed against her family. On the way she enlists the services of an Aboriginal tracker named Billy, who is also marked by trauma from his own violence-filled past.

Kent wrote the script as well as directing, with Baykali Ganambarr, Sam Claflin, Damon Herriman and Ewen Leslie featuring in support of Franciosi.

The Nightingale flies into US cinemas on 2 August, with a UK date still to be announced.

You can pick up tickets to watch the film at Sundance London here.
