New Once Upon a Time in Hollywood trailer: Tarantino returns to the turning point for America and Hollywood

The race was on for Quentin Tarantino to get Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ready in time to première at Cannes, 25 years after winning the Palme d'Or with Pulp Fiction. It was confirmed as playing in competition only a few days after the line-up was announced and took its bow today on the French Riviera. There isn't too long to wait until it arrives in cinemas and thankfully a new red-band trailer for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has also been released to keep up the hype. You can also see a series of new - and much better - posters for the film below.

This trailer gives us more of a insight into the career crisis facing DiCaprio's action star character Rick Dalton, after a decade filled with big budget musicals and historical epics, and changes in American society that were slowly coming to the fore (possibly represented here by the presence of Charles Manson) after the hippy haze of the 60s. There's probably little coincidence that Al Pacino - a star of 70s New Hollywood - also appears in a Tarantino film at last. Tarantino has remained obsessed with films from the '70s throughout his career and it makes sense he would go back to a key turning point in Hollywood's recent history.

The story takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood. The two lead characters are Rick Dalton, former star of a western TV series, and his long-time stunt double Cliff Booth. Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbour…Sharon Tate.

Supporting Pitt, DiCaprio and Robbie will be Al Pacino, Dakota Fanning, Bruce Dern, Damian Lewis, Nicholas Hammond, Scoot McNairy, Lena Dunham, Emile Hirsch, Tim Roth, Timothy Olyphant, Kurt Russell, Margaret Qualley and Luke Perry.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood opens in US theatres on July 26 in UK cinemas on August 14.
