Family Romance, LLC trailer: A first look at Werner Herzog's Japanese-language film

For decades Werner Herzog has remained one of the most versatile and interesting directors working in cinema - a filmmaker who continues to roll out films ten-to-the-dozen (with the occasional acting role thrown in). And this year is no different. Aside from Family Romance, LLC, which plays as a special screening at this year's Cannes, he's also releasing two documentaries: Meeting Gorbachev and Nomad: In the Footsteps of Bruce Chatwin. The other interesting thing is that this is a Japanese language film. No matter what you think about Herzog's work, it can never be said he isn't afraid to keep pushing his own boundaries. The first trailer for Family Romance, LLC can be seen above right now

The synopsis for the film is brief, only revealing:

Romance is a business. Family, friends, followers. All available for hire. A man is hired to impersonate the missing father of a twelve year old girl.

Quite what direction the film will take is anyone's guess, but there are shades of Yorgos Lanthimos' 2011 film, Alps, which was about a group of people who start a business where they impersonate recently deceased loved ones to help customers manage their grief. It sounds like an absurd idea - except you can actually hire people in Japan to do it. You can imagine that Herzog will have a lot on his mind and will use the premise to mediate on the human condition.

Family Romance, LLC stars Yuichi Ishii and Mahiro Tamimoto and after playing at Cannes is likely to secure distribution for a worldwide release later in the year.
