The Current War trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon try to light up the world

Initially intended for release in the run-up to the awards season in late 2017, The Current War is finally set to the see the light of day. It premièred in TIFF in September of that year but fell victim to the post-Weinstein fallout. The film was critically panned and re-edited under Weinstein's direction before being shelved after the emergence of the sexual allegations. It is now not only due for a summer release with new distribution, but director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is able to show the version he always intended (which will differ from the rushed edit shown at TIFF). A new trailer for The Current War arrived this morning and you can watch it above.

In the late 19th century, Edison, famous, iconoclastic and unwaveringly wed to his direct current system of electricity, begins a battle with publicity-shy industrialist Westinghouse, and his system of alternating current. The rivalry begins in his lab at Menlo Park, New Jersey, and spills onto the country’s front pages into a bitter court case. The two struggle via fair means and foul to win the War of the Currents.

Hostilities boil and lives are lost as the rivalry plays out on a thrilling, world-changing scale. As the two vie for the right to power the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, the arrival of an otherworldly Serb inventor called Nikola Tesla may finally tip the balance…

Gomez-Rejon (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) directs, with the cast led by Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon, with Nicholas Hoult, Tom Holland and Katherine Waterston also starring.

The Current War opens in UK cinemas from 26th July with an August release date likely in the US.
