What We Know About The D.B Weiss and David Benioff Star Wars Films

The Skywalker Saga is coming to an end, but what is next for Star Wars? The 'Star Wars Story' films have unfairly faltered despite both Rogue One and Solo being excellent films and we know Rian Johnson (director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi) is working on a new trilogy of his own.

Other than that, we also know that D.B.Weiss and David Benioff, showrunners of the Game of Thrones TV series are also working on their own series of films within the wider saga.

It has now been confirmed that the first of these films will be the next Star Wars movie following the end of the Skywalker Saga with The Rise of Skywalker.

Do we have any details yet?

Not many. Current rumours suggest that the films may well be set before the events of anything else we've seen on screen in the Star Wars universe before. We recently published a rumour that their films could focus on the 'Old Republic', and there are similar rumours that a game set in that time period is also in development. Could the two go hand in hand?

Update: Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that Lucasfilm are looking at the Old Republic for an upcoming Star Wars project.

When can we expect to see these new films?

The first film from the Game of Thrones duo will hit cinemas on 16th December 2022 - that places it around three years after we get to see The Rise of Skywalker in the cinema. Disney have put the series on a short hiatus to regroup and plan the next steps following the poor performance of Solo at the box office.

Bob Iger has been quoted as saying “[We thought] it would be smart for us to take a bit of a hiatus while we figure out what’s next. Now, we’re not going to wait until The Rise of Skywalker is released and start figuring it out, we’re actually hard at work doing that already. The conclusion that we reached was that three years was the proper amount of time to not only take a breather and reset, but to really gear up for the next film’s release.”
