Ring trailer: The classic Japanese horror celebrates its 20th anniversary

Western horror seems to be having a good moment in commercial terms, but 15-20 years ago fans of the genre looked towards Asia for their kicks. Thanks largely to the Tartan Asia Extreme (who have now folded) we got to see films like Audition, The Tale of Two Sisters, Ju-On: The Grudge, Dark Water and a stack of others. Leading the way was Hideo Nakata’s Ringu (or just Ring). It quickly became a horror classic, although it did unfortunately spawn a series of terrible American remakes in the process. Reiko, a journalist and the aunt of one of the victims, sets out to investigate the shocking phenomenon, and in the process uncovers a creepy urban legend about a supposedly cursed videotape, the contents of which causes anyone who views it to die within a week – unless they can persuade someone else to watch it, and, in so doing, pass on the curse….
