You'd be hard pressed to find many people who are not fans of Chiwetel Ejiofor. He has made the transition from TV to cinema seem effortless and has gradually evolved into one of the best actors working on the big screen today. The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind sees the British actor make his debut behind the camera, adding another string to his bow in a move that seems like a logical progression. It is based on William Kamkwamba's autobiography of the same name and will be on Netflix at the start of March. The follows 13-year-old William Kamkwamba (newcomer Maxwell Simba) who is thrown out of the school he loves when his family can no longer afford the fees. Sneaking back into the school library, he finds a way, using the bones of the bicycle belonging to his father Trywell (Ejiofor), to build a windmill which then saves his Malawian village from famine. The emotional journey of a father and his exceptional son at its heart, William’s tale captures the incredible determination of a boy whose inquisitive mind overcame every obstacle in his path.
Ejiofor adapted the book and also start, with Noma Dumezweni, Joseph Marcell, and Aïssa Maïga supporting young Maxwell Simba in the lead role.
The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind opens in select UK cinemas on February 22nd and lands on Netflix March 1st.
