From the PR...

It’s 1972 and 12-year-old Meena is poised on the brink of her teenage years. Torn between her family’s culture and the escape offered by the rock and roll of the era, her daily life is turned upside down by the arrival of Anita Rutter. At 14 – blonde, beautiful, outrageous and sassy – Anita is everything Meena thinks she wants to be and it’s not long before she has joined the rebellious girl gang “The Wenches”!

Based on Meera Syal’s best selling novel and featuring an all-star cast, Anita & Me is a hilarious British comedy in the tradition of East Is East and Bend It Like Beckham and a must own on VHS and DVD.

MEERA SYAL (Auntie Shaila) moves from author to actress as she helps bring to life her own smash hit novel. Best known for her roles in Goodness Gracious Me and The Kumars at No. 42, Meera also wrote the Bollywood spectacle Bombay Dreams.

SANJEEV BHASKAR (Mr Kumar) is well known to British audiences for his multiple comic roles in the award-winning television series Goodness Gracious Me. He recently appeared in The Guru and of course the ever popular The Kumars at No. 42 that he also co-writes.

KATHY BURKE (Mrs Rutter) is one of Britain’s best known actresses. Equally at home on TV or on the big screen, notable roles include Gimme, Gimme, Gimme Nil By Mouth, Elizabeth, Kevin & Perry Go Large and This Year’s Love.

MARK WILLIAMS (The Reverend ‘Uncle’ Alan) is part of the award-winning comedy team behind The Fast Show. He can also be seen as Ron Weasley’s dad in the blockbusting Harry Potter series.

LYNN REDGRAVE (Mrs Ormerod) began her distinguished career back in 1963 and her impressive filmography includes hits such as Shine, The Next Best Thing and Spider.

ANNA BREWSTER (Anita Rutter) and CHANDEEP UPPAL (Meena Kumar) turn in truly remarkable performances in their first major film roles. Clearly ones to watch for the future.
