Transformers: Age of Extinction Crushes Opposition At The US Box Office

Michael Bay's destruction derby continues to defy the critics as the latest instalment in the franchise raked in a further $36.4 million at the US box office.

Transformers Age of Extinction is in its second week of release in the States, and has already taken $174.7 million from the pockets of our American cousins. Add these numbers to a foreign total of $400.9 million and that takes Bay's latest effort to a combined total of over $575 million.

Despite these good numbers, the fourth film in the Transformers franchise is some way behind previous entries Revenge of the Fallen and Dark of the Moon. ROTF went on to take over $402 million, while DOTM took over $352 million.

With Age of Extinction taking a massive 64% drop in takings in its second week, it seems unlikely that it will even surpass the domestic haul of the first Transformers movie which took $319 million.

These numbers are unlikely to worry director Michael Bay, or Paramount Pictures just yet, as audiences still seem keen on the series despite its seemingly universal critical panning.

Elsewhere at the US box office were Tammy in second place with $21.7 million. While Deliver Us From Evil took $9.5 million to finish third. 22 Jump Street kept its place in the top 5 in the films fourth week of release with a solid $9.4 million, which left How To Train Your Dragon 2 to complete the top 5 earning over $8 million with the animated sequel also in its fourth week at the cinema.
