The nominations for the 86th Annual Academy Awards have been announced with Gravity & American Hustle leading the way with ten nominations each, while 12 Years A Slave featured highly, receiving nine nominations. As the Oscars celebrate the best that cinema has to offer, it is left to The Razzies to celebrate all that was awful at the cinema in 2013. Adam Sandler effort Grown Ups 2 leads the pack with 8 nominations, while After Earth and A Madea Christmas were not far behind with six nominations each. Rotten Tomatoes
With James Spader having already signed on the dotted line to star as the big bad in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron, word has it that Marvel have also signed Thomas Kretschmann to star as secondary villain Baron von Strucker. von Strucker is another HYDRA agent who has several run ins with Captain America & Nick Fury, and there may even be room for a cameo from the character at some point during this years Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Conan O'Brien confirmed the news on Twitter that Warner Bros. would be releasing a complete, 120 episode, box set of the 1960's Batman TV series. The set will be out later in the year, but is so far only listed as being available on DVD, but more details are expected to be announced soon. Twitter
After Javier Bardem passed on the role of Captain Blackbeard for the upcoming Peter Pan reboot at Warner Bros. the studio have now approached Hugh Jackman for the villainous role. Pan will be directed by Joe Wright, and the story will be an origin story for the famous boy who never grew up. While Blackbeard will provide the big bad this time around, it is understood that the more famous of Pan's nemesis', Captain Hook, will serve as Peter's ally in this film before finally turning on him at a later point. Word has it that Warner Bros. are seeking Joaquin Phoenix for the role of Lex Luthor in their upcoming Man Of Steel sequel, Batman Vs Superman. Apparently the likes of Denzel Washington & Idris Elba have already been tapped for the part, but now Warners are apparently seriously considering Phoenix for the role. Variety
Even though we will be fortunate enough to see Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart return to our screens next year as Magneto & Professor Xavier, in the X-Men sequel Days Of Future Past, it seems that we will not be seeing them in the already announced sequel X-Men: Apocalypse. It has been largely hinted that the younger First Class team will be returning for Apocalypse, and when interviewed by The Wall Street Journal, Stewart & McKellen confirmed their absence;
Stewart: "I don’t know if Ian knows anything about this. I know nothing about this. Another X-Men movie has been announced. … Has anyone called you? Are you keeping something from me?"
McKellen: "No, I know nothing about it. Which probably means we're not in it." The Wall Street Journal
Forbes Magazine has published their annual list of the highest paid actors in Hollywood, with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson coming out on top. Being part of G.I. Joe: Retaliation & Fast & Furious 6 meant that Johnson's films accumulated $1.3 billion Worldwide. Iron Man 3 star Robert Downey Jr. was second after the Marvel Studios effort took in $1.2 billion. Steve Carell & Vin Diesel were third and fourth on the list, while Sandra Bullock rounded out the top five after earning $642 million & $230 million respectively for her roles in The Heat & Gravity. If you haven't caught it already, then you seriously need to check out the teaser trailer for Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.The sequel to Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes will be directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) and stars Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke & Keri Russell. The IMDb has this synopsis;
"A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species." The film is due for release on July 17th 2014 in the UK.
