Spider-Man > Captain Marvel?

Yesterday's news that Spider-Man is to join the Marvel film universe has been really well received by most fans. It's been something that has been discussed by Marvel and Sony on-and-off for a number of years but more often than not negotiations have faltered.

The fact that the studios have now managed to come to an arrangement is a good thing and may open the door to more cross-studio collaborations in the future. Another great thing.

To make way for the new Spider-Man film in 2017, four existing Marvel properties have been delayed by around six months - Thor: Ragnarok, Captain Marvel, Black Panther and The Inhumans have all shifted back. Avengers: Infinity War hasn't been affected.

The really disappointing thing is that we're now waiting until November 2018 to see the first female-lead Marvel movie on the big screen. This is despite the hugely successful outing on TV for Agent Carter and the very highly anticipated Aka Jessica Jones proving there is huge amounts of demand for the ladies leading the fight.

Isn't it odd that as soon as Spidey was able to be brought into Marvel's control, the tightly planned and plotted 'Phase 2' could suddenly be juggled to accommodate yet ANOTHER male superhero when we've got to wait another three years for Captain Marvel?

We've said it before, and we'll say it again, comic book film fans are crying out for this stuff - we've seen so many people asking for a solo outing for Scarlett Johanson's Black Widow.

It's not as though anyone is really crying out for another Spider-Man film. In the last 13 years there have been FIVE films featuring the web-slinger. OK, two of them have been pretty poor, but Sam Raimi's first two films were excellent and the first Amazing Spider-Man reboot was a decent stab at trying something new.

Now we've got two more films coming up that will feature Peter Parker's alter-ego before Captain Marvel fills the obvious female-shaped void... Disappointing.
