George Lucas nearly directed Star Wars: Episode VII
News that Star Wars was to be resurrected when Disney bought Lucasfilm sent shockwaves around the internet when it was announced a few years ago. However, what we didn't know then was that George Lucas was already planning a 2015 release for Episode VII with him writing and directing.
While talking to USA Today to promote his new film, Strange Magic, Lucas revealed his plans were shelved when Disney made their offer: "It’s better for me to get out at the beginning of a new thing and I can just remove myself. Time is more important than money."
While fans wait with baited breath to see what JJ Abrams has done with the latest installment in the near-40 year old franchise, many will be breathing a sigh of relief now that they're discovering that they were so close to another attempt by Lucas to recapture the magic of the original trilogy.
