Could Neill Blomkamp's Alien actually happen?

District 9 director Neill Blomkamp who is currently on the promo trail for his latest film Chappie surprised us all earlier this year with his release of concept art for his take on an Alien sequel. At the time, the director himself scotched rumours that it would ever happen with a simple tweet.

However he's now spoken a little more about his personal project and it transpires that not only has he spoken to Sigourney Weaver about it, but also Fox are allegedly interested in making it a reality. Talking to Coming Soon at a junkey to promote Chappie Blomkamp was asked about the Alien concept art, and specifically whether Fox had been involved in any way.

“Fox was blindsided by it, which wasn’t my intention,” he explained to Coming Soon. “I just wanted to share artwork with people that liked the franchise. I don’t know whether it’s going to happen or not. We’ll see.”

In a separate, but related interview with Uproxx it turns out that he has had some talks but it is his own reticence to the project that might stop it becoming a reality.

Uproxx: Someone at Fox should listen to you about this.

Blomkamp: That’s not the problem, actually.

What’s the problem?

Me. I’m the problem. Fox, they would make it. Like, tomorrow. They would make it.

Then what’s the problem here? I assumed there were obstacles, like maybe Ridley Scott wasn’t on board.

No, no, it’s not politics.

So, there IS a chance that the exciting concept art we've seen could become the basis of a real project. But it's really down to whether Blomkamp himself wants to take it on and right now he's unsure whether he wants to make another Hollywood funded movie at all...
