On Monday 9 leading Japanese electronics companies announced they have agreed on the next generation large capacity optical disc video recording format called "Blu-ray Disc". Thought to be in direct response to the recent Digital-VHS
Announcements it has been unveiled that a single layer 'Blu-Ray' disc can record, rewrite and playback 27gb of data, the equivalent of 2hrs worth of HDTV quality footage. The companies that established the basic specifications for the Blu-ray Disc are: Hitachi Ltd., LG Electronics Inc., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., Pioneer Corporation, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Sharp Corporation, Sony Corporation, and Thomson Multimedia.
