What is the Dune 2 release date? Denis Villeneuve’s science fiction movie left us all on a cliffhanger, waiting for a sequel. It was thought that the Blade Runner 2049 director was adapting all of Frank Herbert’s legendary 1965 novel into one adventure movie, but now we know it was only Part One, with Part Two to finish the Dune story.
By not using the same strategy as Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and filming it all in one go for staggered release, audiences are left in the lurch about when they’ll get the rest of the story. Though Part One has its share of satisfying character arcs, the Dune ending shows this is clearly one half of a greater whole, and now we want the rest.
Thankfully, you can consider us the Bene Gesserit of the best movies and TV series with all the knowledge and investigative skills we have around the mediums. We have all the information on the Dune 2 release date readily available right here for you, and we’ll be keeping it updated as we get closer to the thriller movie. Get ready, and do watch out for sandworms.
Dune 2 release date
The Dune 2 release date is currently November 3, 2023. This means that the movie is coming two weeks earlier than previously, thought, as the release date had previously been confirmed as November 17 2023 – great news for those eager for more Arrakis.
Denis Villeneuve made Dune with the intention of doing Dune 2 (and then maybe even a third), but had no assurances it would happen. After Dune released, Warner Bros had hinted that the sequel was on its way, but held off on confirming it for a few weeks.

“Will we have a sequel to Dune? If you watch the movie you see how it ends. I think you pretty much know the answer to that,” Ann Sarnoff, chair and CEO of WarnerMedia Studios and Networks, told Deadline in October 2021.
Production on Dune started in earnest in July 2022. Villeneuve has announced that filming will take place across Budapest, Abu Dhabi, Jordan, and Italy
What will the Dune 2 plot be?
Ultimately, the Dune 2 movie is going to cover the rise of Paul Atreides as the messiah of the Fremen, and his counterattack on House Harkonnen. At the end of Dune: Part One, we see him start to embrace the idea of having a greater purpose and the great power that dwells in him as the son of a Bene Gesserit and the heir to House Atreides.
The official Dune 2 synopsis reads: “This follow-up film will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.”
That’s no moon: The best sci-fi series
Villeneuve has spoken on his plans to get deeper on Dune’s mythology, and explore other perspectives in Part Two. “In the second one, I want to have more flexibility, and it will be possible to go a little bit deeper into some of these details. It’s like a chess game,” he told Empire. “Some new characters will be introduced in the second part and a decision I made very early on was that this first part would be more about Paul Atreides and the Bene Gesserit, and his experience of being in contact for the first time with a different culture. Second part, there will be much more Harkonnen stuff.”
We should also get more of Chani and the Fremen, learning about their society as the oppressed, brutalised natives of Arrakis. And we’ll meet the mysterious Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV, who orchestrated everything we see in Part One. Expect to see Dave Bautista’s Glossu Rabban, a bullish enforcer for House Harkonnen, get a little more to do as well.
who will be in the Dune 2 cast?
Many of the Dune cast are returning for the movie Dune 2. That means Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgård, and Bautista, each a major character that survived the events of Part One.
Villeneuve has said we’ll get new characters, with an emphasis on House Harkonnen. We’ll have to wait for more on who these might be, and who’ll be playing them. The universe of Dune holds many secrets, and we shouldn’t take anything for granted when it comes to Spice.
Austin Butler, star of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, has joined the cast of Dune 2 as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, while Florence Pugh has also jumped on board as Princess Irulan Corrino. And, in huge news, legendary actor Christopher Walken will also make an appearance as Emperor Shaddam IV.
The confirmed Dune 2 cast so far is:
- Timothée Chalamet
- Rebecca Ferguson
- Javier Bardem
- Josh Brolin
- Stellan Skarsgård
- Dave Bautista
- Charlotte Rampling
- Stephen McKinley Henderson
- Austin Butler
