The Best Projectors 2018 - Bring The Cinema To You
Nothing beats watching films in the cinema - that perfectly dark environment with screen that fills your whole vision. Even the largest TVs can't cope with the thrill of seeing larger than life action or drama. All is not lost - projectors are the closest thing you can get to a cinema in your own lounge, with screen sizes measured in metres rather than inches and coupled with a decent surround system you can almost forget you're sat on your comfortable sofa.
But, which projector is right for you - there are more than ever and price-per-inch of screen size they now compete and beat the standard TV. We've picked out our favourites to give you a good idea of what to look for and where best to buy them to get the best value for money.
Best Budget 4K Projector
Optoma UHD300X / UHD40
This is our 4K projector of choice for those on a budget. Stunning picture quality, a relatively small form factor and ease of use combine to create the ideal solution for your average lounge. We liked it so much, we recently gave it a perfect 10/10 score in our full review. For the money it beats all competition and gives even high end 1080p projectors a run for their money.
It's the quietest projector we've tested too - so much so that you forget it's even there.
Best Mid-Range 4K Projector
Optoma UHD65 / UHD60
Optoma continually impress us, not only do they have the budget end of the 4K market sewn up, the UHD65 manages to take our top spot in the mid-range market too. Bigger than the UHD300X and slightly noisier, what it loses in convenience it makes up for with one of the sharpest and most vibrant pictures we've seen. We defy anyone not to be blown away. Again we've recently given this one the full review treatment so pop on over and have a read.
Best Portable Projector
LG PH450UG Minibeam
Tiny, but packing an impressive punch, the LG PH450UG throws a decent 720p image from just inches from your chosen display surface. While it can't hold a candle to the 4K behemoths we've listed above in terms of display quality, we challenge you to find anything that is quite as convenient for carrying over to a friends house for a big screen gaming session! It's pretty good value for money too.
Best 1080p Short Throw Projector
The ultimate gaming projector? Possibly. The 1080p Optoma GT1080Darbee can throw a massive 100 inch screen from a distance of 1 meter - and with a 16ms response time the delay between your console of choice and the screen is as good as most TVs. Even better, the picture quality is remarkable given the technical limitations of short throw devices. We're a huge fan of this one.
Best Budget 1080p Projector
The Optoma HD27 is such a great device at a price that brings it in at around the same cost as a budget 50 inch TV but offering more than double the screen size. The full HD picture isn't quite as vibrant as you'd get from an HDR supporting device costing at least double, but it's still sharp and bright and it ticks every other box. Decent connectivity and Optoma's trademark reliability (it's no surprise that most of the projectors in this list come from Optoma's labs) make the asking price a real bargain.
