Peacemaker season 2 release date speculation, cast, plot, and news

John Cena is bringing the DCU's best comedy series back, so the wait's on for the Peacemaker season 2 release date. We're counting the days.

Peacemaker season 2 release date: John Cena as Peacemaker

It has been two years now since James Gunn and John Cena asked us all “do ya really wanna taste it?” and we responded with a very hearty yes. And while we were satisfied with our first dose of comic book comedy from the unconventional DC hero, we’re still waiting for the Peacemaker season 2 release date.

While so much of the DC Universe is now set to be dismantled and rebooted by James Gunn (which is a nightmare for our DC movies in order list), Peacemaker is one of the few survivors. Gunn is clinging on to Christopher Smith and the show’s other DC characters for another installment of one of the best TV series in the superhero world. Here’s everything we know so far.

Is Peacemaker season 2 still happening?

James Gunn has made it very clear that Peacemaker season 2 is still on the way. The DCU is changing, but that won’t stop Peacemaker coming back soon.

When asked by a fan whether Peacemaker season 2 had been canceled, Gunn responded emphatically. He tweeted: “Heck no, just postponed while I work on Superman Legacy. Waller first. PM after.” In June 2023, Gunn again confirmed that he was in the midst of a pause on Peacemaker season 2 while he worked on his Superman movie.

The question is then, when will Peacemaker return? After all, he didn’t get a mention when Gunn announced the new Chapter 1 Gods and Monsters slate of upcoming DC movies.

We're still waiting for John Cena's return in the Peacemaker season 2 release date

Peacemaker season 2 release date speculation

Peacemaker season 2 won’t arrive until 2026 at the earliest because James Gunn is working on Superman Legacy instead for now.

Superman Legacy is currently slated for a July 11, 2025, release date. Fortunately, Gunn isn’t holding Peacemaker at a complete standstill until then. He confirmed in November 2023 that he’s working on the scripts for the second season already, which means cameras could start rolling as soon as Gunn’s Superman commitments are behind him.

Fortunately, Superman Legacy is zooming along as planned in the aftermath of the Hollywood strikes, so it should hit that 2025 date unless something goes very wrong indeed. That means Gunn could have cameras rolling on Peacemaker again before the end of 2025, once he’s had a bit of a lie down after recovering from the hard work of bringing us a new spin on Superman.

By the time post-production on Peacemaker has finished, we’ll be well into 2026 and we expect that we’re unlikely to see the character again until the second half of 2026. But don’t be surprised if it moves into 2027 either.

Peacemaker cast

Peacemaker season 2 cast speculation

We’d expect John Cena and Freddie Stroma to return as the two leads of the Peacemaker season 2 cast, alongside some of their Task Force X buddies.

Gunn’s tweet announcing Peacemaker season 2 featured all the surviving members of Task Force X from the Peacemaker cast introduced in the first season, and both Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee popped up in the Shazam 2 ending to tease their continued DCU roles.

We expect all of these folk to show up again in future new movies, but Peacemaker season 2 will remind us about how great they are. It looks like Viola Davis will be one of the busiest women in the whole franchise, as she’s also leading her own show when the Waller release date comes around. She can’t be stopped!

Robert Patrick is also hoping to return as August ‘Auggie’ Smith. While Auggie died after Peacemaker put a bullet through his head, the season finale hinted Chris is still haunted by his father, even hallucinating that he was sitting with him in the episode’s dying moments.

Here is the Peacemaker season 2 cast list:

  • John Cena as Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker
  • Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase, aka Vigilante
  • Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo
  • Steve Agee as John Economos
  • Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt
  • Viola Davis as Amanda Waller
  • Robert Patrick as August ‘Auggie’ Smith

What might happen in Peacemaker season 2?

The Peacemaker season 2 plot is a mystery, and it’s hard to even hazard a guess as to where things will go with the future of the DCU in such flux.

Even if the continuity wasn’t a bit screwy at the moment, it’s not like we’d have predicted season 1 would tell a story about alien butterflies taking over the planet, so we wouldn’t want to try and predict where Gunn will take things.

That said, there are a few dangling plot threads left over from the first season. The first is Peacemaker’s guilt for killing his dad, Auggie, despite the abuse he put Chris and his brother through. In the final episode, Peacemaker hallucinates his dad berating him, causing the already unhinged hero to act even more violently.

There’s also the fallout of Adebayo’s decision to reveal what’s going on at Belle Reve to the world. With the Suicide Squad scheme now revealed, it’s likely that Amanda Waller will be disgraced. Might Waller come for the team that ruined her good name? It’s possible the fact she was exposed by her own daughter may curtail her need for revenge, but you never can tell with DC villains like Waller.

Peacemaker cast

Will Peacemaker season 2 have more DCU cameos?

In a word, yes. Gunn has said he’s planning plenty more cameos, like the appearance of the Justice League at the end of season one, although he can’t guarantee it’ll be the League every time.

If we pick anyone to turn up in season 2 from the wider DCU, it would be Peacemaker’s old buddy Bloodsport (aka one of the best DC characters ever). We’re sure those two could do with a good chat. Then again, given that we’ll have the first of the new Superman movies by the time Peacemaker returns, maybe the Big Blue Boy Scout could make an appearance.

The cameo waters have been muddied slightly by the fact we’ll be looking at a completely refreshed DC continuity by this point. We might even get cameos from characters who haven’t even appeared in the new movie slate beforehand, which could be a smart way to introduce them to audiences. We already love Peacemaker, so why not sneak some strange characters in through the back door?

Is there a Peacemaker season 2 trailer?

Sorry, Peacemaker’s second season hasn’t started filming yet, so your chances of watching it any time soon are about as likely as seeing Wonder Woman’s invisible plane, i.e. not very likely.

But while you wait, we’re bringing you a gag reel from Peacemaker’s first season. After all, there was plenty to enjoy on screen in DC’s best comedy series so far that some of that was bound to spill over into the behind-the-scenes world too. Everyone loves some behind-the-scenes chaos.

Where can I watch Peacemaker season 2?

You can’t watch Peacemaker season 2 just yet, but it will stream on Max (formerly HBO Max) in the US.

If you’re in Britain, head over to NOW/Sky for more from Peacemaker season 2 when the release date comes around.

How many episodes are in Peacemaker season 2?

We expect Peacemaker season 2 to run for eight episodes, just like the first season. We can’t see Gunn messing with such a perfect formula. Although, he’ll now have so much freedom as DC boss that he can tell an even longer story if he wants to.
