Hidden Gems - Digital Treasures, March 2016

These days we have access to so many amazing digital TV offerings, whether paid for like Netflix, Amazon Prime or NowTV; or free or advertising supported like BBC player, All 4 or the recently relaunched ITV Hub. With so much choice it can be hard to decide between all the offerings, there's sadly no cross-platform search or recommendation engine. So, here at The Digital Fix we've decided to unearth some of hidden gems of the streaming TV world, for your viewing pleasure. Every month we'll pick out the best, or most interesting, from what's new, old or obscure.

Netflix

Endeavour

The popular prequel series to Inspector Morse, follows the young detective known on Tumblr as Baby Morse on his cases in 1960's Oxford. While the recently aired series three isn't available here, the first two seasons are there to catch up on, and well worth a watch, or a rewatch.

The Returned

Though The Returned has been remade and rebooted, many would argue that the original French series originally named Les Revenants is the one to watch. In a small French village, many dead people reappear, apparently alive and normal, but all is not as it appears as supernatural phenomena occur in the area. For fans of The Walking Dead who aren't adverse to subtitles.

Amazon Instant

The Americans

An espionage period drama, set in the 1980s, follows two KGB sleeper agents in Washington navigate the treacherous waters of spying on the US government, dealing with their doubts about their Soviet masters, and trying to maintain a family life. Two season of this excellent drama are available on Amazon Prime, though sadly the fourth season isn't free to watch for subscribers.

Into the Badlands

A bit of a left field choice this one, Into the Badlands is a post-Apocalyptic martial arts actioner, loosely following the plot of Into the West, in an America ruled by tyrannical warlords. While the acting may be a little thin in parts, there is plenty for martial arts fans to enjoy, and at a mere six episodes is not a long term commitment.

Misfits

An antidote perhaps to Heroes Reborn, all five seasons of Channel 4's show about five youth offenders on community service who gain superpowers are available. A street level, often humorous take on the genre, and still better than many of it's stablemates.

ITV Hub

A Touch of Frost

A classic that feels older than the mere decade or so since airing, four seasons of A Touch of Frost are available on ITV Hub until the end of March. David Jason's renowned police procedural paved the way for TV shows like Vera and Endeavour popular today.
